Leopoldskron Palace

Leopoldskron Palace lies on an enchanting lake. The filming took place on the same location as the famous "Boat Scene". What happens when someone falls on the beach? With an eyeglass (bring them with you).

Hellbrunner Street

Upon seeing Sound of Music this wall is immediately seen. Its exactly where Maria's first appearance in a Von Trapp mansion has happened. There are scenes in the film in which a driver threw the truck from the road in a desperate attempt to escape the night.

Schloss Mirabell

The Mirabell Palace is a UNESCO-listed landmark and an important Sound music film location. Built in the early 16th century as a moderate house by the mistress Salome Alt Price-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich it provided an enjoyable escape from the busy streets of the centre of the town.

Though the palace was destroyed by an 1818 fire the famous Angel staircase, the marble rooms and the Cathedral were untouched. The garden was designed after Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach e.V. The marble hall was where Mozart and his wife Nannerl performed.

Sound of Music Scenes at Mirabell Palace & Gardens

Final part of the song ‘Do Re Mi' was shot in the palace grounds. The film shows Maria and her children dancing and singing around the Pegasus Fountain before they run freely across an open vine tunnel near the western part of the garden. Maria and the children sit in the south-end of the garden.

This scene is followed by another brief sequence at the Grand Fountain (Viers-Elémente-Brunnen). Those last two scenes in the grounds are probably most famous though. The children touch a dwarf's skull in the dwarf garden.

Hellbrunn Palace, Gazebo

During the Original Sound of Music Tour, you can see a Gazebo in which a 16:17 scene was recorded. Despite being not on its original site the building is used for the film productions (the garden has since been rebuilt by the Hellbrun Palace to give visitors an opportunity to visit them).

Nearby, there's an even more scenic road on which children hang from a tree. Baron Von Trapp is returning home from visiting.

Salzburg Lake District

The highlight is a visit to Lake District where panorama photos are taken. You'll be there longer for a breath-taking view of a beautiful mountain air or just for a picture.

Salzburger Marionettentheater

It was opened in 1913 and has become one of the oldest performing Marionettes in the world. The company is currently performing over 2,600 concerts around the world including various opera and ballet works.

They were contacted to perform for a movie but were unfortunately not able. Instead American puppeter Bil Baird worked with wife Cora Eisenberg and his crew.

One of the best-known moments is Maria performing the musical "The Little Goather” for the Captain and his guests. Moreover, the scene was shot at the Hollywood Film Center with the model akin to the extravagant Venetian Room on Leopoldkron Schloss Salzburg. The date is 0118:55 Maria and her children play "Lonely Goather" for the Captain and guests.

Sound of Music Scenes at Mozartsteg

Like other Salzburger parts Mozartsteg appears in film in his favourite scenes during the montage. Maria carries her kids on to the bridge with picnicwear, before stopping to enjoy the view over the city.

Timers00:55:43 Maria and the kids are running through the Mozartsteg during this ‘My favourite things’ film.

Stift Nonnberg

Stift Nonnberg is the Benedictine monastery of Saint Rupert established in 713. A huge section of this building has been blown down by a fire in 1423 that resulted in the establishment of a new convent during the early 15th century.

Sound of Music Scenes at Stift Nonnberg

Several scenes are filmed at Nonnberg Abbey. Filming outside the courtyard has not been permitted, and therefore the film is remodeled as the set in Hollywood. However Maria's exit is shot in a nearby film studio.

The church gates appear again after Maria visits and again after the film when the Von Trapp family evades Nazi occupation. Timings00:07:44 Nuns are enjoying life in an empty chapel. The Nun talks about Maria's murder in the courtyard of the Nonnberg Abbey. Maria enters in Nonnberg Abbey courtyard. Maria had left her church.

In the ‘Do Re Mi' montage Maria & her family take a carriage down Nonntaler Hauptstraße. Time Stamps: 01:01:23: Maria sings with the children.

How to See & Recreate the Scenes

I'd recommend starting early to start. It's quite a busy area at night, making your favourite scenes a bit awkward. The Mirabell gardens open around 6:00 p.m., giving the opportunity to take some great photos!

I'd suggest preparing the steps and tunnel runs first since the Dwarf garden and the tunnels for vines are closed in winter. The Garden is free of charge. Marble Hall is free to visit from 8 am a.m. - 07:00 - 15:00. Instructions.

Villa Trapp

The Von Trapp house has been unused since filming. It is situated in Aischen a little over 4 kilometers from centre Salzburg. The family lived there from 1936 until they escaped to Austria in 1938, on the day Heinrich Himmler's home became an exclusive residence. The villa today serves as a hotel with an exhibition of stories from the Von Trapp family.

Mondsee Lake

Mondsee is a mountain lake east from Salzburg at about a 30 km from the town centre. During summer months lakes and their surroundings attract local residents. The landscape is breathtaking, the hotel is beautiful!

Sound of Music Scenes at Mondsee Lake

Mondsee lake is shown numerous times during the film. It appears as an reflected reflection on a mirror when Maria travels to Von Trapp's home. It is particularly the backdrop of the picturesque cycling tour Maria took along with her children during the film "Do Re Mi'".

This is also seen in an earlier scene where Captain returns to Vienna together. They mention local children hanging in the branches. Timing:00:50:50 Maria travels to Von Trapp Villa. 0:00:56 Maria is riding a bike in Lake Water with her family. 05:00. Children hang out in the trees.

St. Michael's Church in Mondsee

Returning to Mondsee St. Michael's Church is an uncommon instance in which Sound of Music scenes are filmed in person rather than at Hollywood Studios. St. Michael's Church in Moenseux can be a good place if one doesn't have a connection. It was an incredible example of Gothic architecture in our town.

Sound of Music Scenes at Mondsee Basilica

The Mondsee basilica is seen in a key scene in the film. Here Maria gets married and the captain is married (in filmed scenes, as the marriage actually occurred on Nonnberg Abbey). The church is visible both inside and outside. Timers:02.17:04The organ plays on Maria's wedding day.

Schloss Leopoldskron

Schloss Löpold is one beautiful example of rocoque architecture, situated about 6 miles south of downtown Salzburg. It was built in 1736 to serve the royal Archbishop Leopold Freiherr von Firma and his family. It has an interior of opulent rooms, including almost entirely gold Venetian rooms.

Sound of Music Scenes at Leopoldskron Castle

Schloss Leopoldskron is constantly used throughout film to create the lake scene on the patios. Schloss Leopoldskron is on the backside of Von Trapp's house. Some sets were built to emulate palace interiors like puppet theaters.

In this room Maria is first presented to the children; the dancing occurs in the Von Trapp Villa. Time stamped00:23:10 Maria arrives at the hotel. 01.30:35 Maria meets Captain. 0036:43 Liesl leaves her place and meets Rolf. 08:00:31 - Captain and Baron arrive in Vienna.

Sound of Music Gazebo

The lovely pavilion seen at The Sound of Music was built on the grounds of Leopoldskron Castle. It is now found within the Garden of Hellbrun.

Sound of Music Locations Outside Salzburg

Apart from Sound Music locations in Old town Salzburg several locations of filming occurred in inner districts of the city or in nearby village areas. We've listed the places that can be reached by foot. While certain areas are readily accessible via bus or taxi, our advice is that you hire your own automobile for the most beautiful.

Sound of Music Scenes at Frohnburg Castle

Schloss Frohnburg has been designed for frontage since Schloss Leopold'skron reflects the back of the Villa von Trapp in the film. It appears on many occasions, for instance when Maria arrives at Von Trapp Villa for the first time.

The clock is now 00:23:55. Maria came first at the Von Trapp Villas: 03:30:59 Rolf arrives at Vontrapp Villa with a telegram for Captain. 15 minutes Maria and her family leave Von Trapp Villa in picnic clothes. 02:32h22 Guests come into the Von Trappe home. 01:44h50. Second act.

Sound of Music Scenes at Hellbrunner Allee

Although the street appears occasionally you can usually see it most clearly in scenes like when Maria leaves the buses to get into the Von Trapp Villa. Time stamp 00:00:23 Maria leaves the bus during montage. 00:21 :21. In ‘I Believe’montage.

Rossfeld Panorama Street

Rossfeld panoramastraße is one of the Sound of Music film locations, but the scenery is very beautiful but surprisingly difficult. It was an exclusive road that stood at the top of a hill on the border with Germany. Certainly worth visiting by car.

Sound of Music Scenes at the Rossfeld Panorama Street

During the film Sound the Music Rossfeld panorama street is used for filming Von Trapp's escape through the mountain range. Although it appears the men fled on foot rather than by train, the scenes provide an emotional finale. The family climbs the Untersberg Mountain, which is visible at this location. Time Stamp02:53:51 Families of the Von Trapp escape Switzerland.
