In 2019, global tourists amounted to 1.5 billion, and the tourism industry generated 1.5 trillion dollars in revenue (UNWC). This is the 10th consecutive year of growing, with arrival numbers increasing each year.

Tourist revenue grew faster than global GDP. Ten years of rapid growth in many countries has left tourism with very little restrictions on its growing popularity. Only recently has sustainable tourism become a serious priority for destinations & operators around the world.

Solutions to overtourism for destinations

As tourists are increasing worldwide the World Tourism Organization has authored a report on overtourism. Of course, it doesn't have a single problem, it's only small things that we're able to do on our holidays.

Two visitors to Starved Rock State Park in Illinois allegedly drew their initials on an over 400 million year-old sandstorm formation that's also a sacred place for Native Americans

The weekend after the attack happened at the park, two people were accused of vandalizing the structure, which was more than 4 billion years old and was also used in Native American ceremonies for 8,000.

A family traveling around New Zealand had its visas revoked after wreaking havoc throughout the country, including threatening tourists, stealing, and ruining a motel room

A British family of 12 terrorised New Zealanders on their trip. The kids of the couple were caught by surveillance cameras taking away the Christmas tree while shopping for groceries. A third family member allegedly said the food was cooked with bug bites in one restaurant.

Those who have been charged with the crimes say the incident was ongoing and they have also been reported throwing spaghetti on their floors. Staff members said there was a smell that looked like kids poo and took hours. It does not end here.

An Indonesian court sentenced a British tourist to six months in prison for slapping an immigration official in 2018

Briton Auj-e Taqadda is serving a six-month sentence for hitting an Immigration Official in Jakarta on the backside of his plane. This happens even recorded and semi-virtually. Taqaddas was seen slapping the officer in the forehead at the international airport in Bali, Indonesia.

She was shocked she didn't have time to travel to Singapore as a precaution. Taqaddis did not show up for trial two more times until the authorities finally located her at a mall. She was later convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment for assaulting officers.

Erosion of culture

Physical damage to natural and marine areas

Jake Siebenliste was arrested by Denver police in December after allegedly attempting to destroy 10 paintings. Officials said his mental state wasn't "reasonably stable." It could be that the destroyed works may have dates from the second century. The incident has been captured on video and is now being reported to police, citing the incident is "without precedent" at the museum.

Egyptian authorities are investigating a photo that appears to show a Danish couple having sex on top of the Great Pyramid of Giza
