04. Drive the Garden Route

After a few weeks visiting Cape Town and Stellenbosch a lot of people take part in an enjoyable garden trip. It is the most interesting thing in South Africa, taking you through magnificent coast scenes.

From Mossel Bay the perfectly asphalted road travels 170 km to Storms River on the Eastern Cape. The Outeniqua Mountains are bordered to one side with the Tsitsikama Mountains while the other overlooks the waters. The shorelines surround the magnificent beaches, lagoons and tide pools. 05. Kgalagadi (Kalahari) Transfrontier Park, Northern Cape

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park combines South African Kalaha National Park with Botswana Gemsbok National Park. Established in 2000, it represents Africa's first transfrontier park officially recognized as a world-renowned attraction in the South African Northern Cape.

The gleam of camel thorn trees and sand are the perfect backdrop to photograph the game and its habitats. Among the wide diversity of wildlife, these large reserves are home to the famous black-manee calahari lion.

06. Pilanesberg National Park

What is your favorite African film in the world of films? Pilanesberg National Park is an area with prolific animals and an amazing diversity of birds within two hours' driving distance. Easy access from major metropolitan areas, they make for great excursions or multiple day trips.

Its size is much smaller than the massive Kruger Nationalpark, but is consequently more crowded for game. Pilanesberg lies in a transitional zone, between the deserted Kalahari Desert and the rainy Lowlands. There's extensive animal diversity.

07. iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Another place worth a trip to for totally separate reasons is Simangaliso Wetlands park near KwaZulu. The idyllic bays, beaches or reefs here are a delight that are worth exploring. Home to the most extensive estuarine system on Africa, the name translates as'magic and dazzling' in Zulus.

We certainly found its beauty fascinating since savannas surrounded by mangroves are a beautiful sight. You will find many hippods, crocodiles and a variety of other wildlife like leopards, white rhinoceros and elephants. Occasionally a fun dolphin and a pod whale can even be found just off shore.

08. Cape Agulhas – Southernmost Tip Of Africa

Cape Agulhas, South Africa, has far too little attention from all other attractions in South Africa and tourist destinations for its purpose. What an interesting place! When you stand there and two oceans come together, you feel like we reached our end.

Cape Agulha can also be visited by stopping here on their way back from Cape Town along the garden Route. The trip was a day we stopped just as we travelled from Knysn to Cape Town. TIPS: I suggest removing the drive and settling down either in Cape Agulhas or in the region of Hermanu or Gansbaa.

09. Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga

Beautiful Blyde River Canyon Natural Reserve (also called Motlatse River Canyon) is an excellent stop on our road from Johannesburg. The park contains the largest canyon in Africa and offers a vast array of wild life and vegetation in the area. Subtropical foliage and lichens are found in the landscape.

Game watching is particularly rewarding, as there are many common South African primates and numerous hippos and crocodiles. It’s the most scenic way to visit the park by taking the scenic route or by hiking the extensive trail.

10. Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape

South Africas second largest national park, Addo Elephant National Park began in 1931 to save the last 10 bush elephants of South Africa from extinction. In Eastern Cape, about 72 km from Port Elizabeth, it has about 60 elephant species.

It's interesting to look closely at the ecosystems of this National Park that runs between Karoko and the coast. And apart from elephants, the park houses many breeding populations of African penguin birds and Cape gannets.

11. Boulders Penguin Colony, Simon's Town, Western Cape

You can visit Simons Town about an hour away from Cape Town. There are three lovely beaches that house Boulder Penguin colonies. The population of charismatic black and white endangered penguins in Africa is approximately 2,000.

There are birds reclining on sand or surrounding stones, and they also take a dip. The lake's surface is clear and calm and as boulder walls protect it from wind and currents it also provides a good swimming site when it can withstand ice temperatures on a clear day.

12. Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape

Surfers flock to Jeffreys Beach between May and September to try and hang out at one of South Africa's best known Break Supertubes. The J-Bay, as the city is commonly known, is among the best surfing areas on Earth and hosts major competitions. The left-hand break is possible in strong swell at speeds exceeding 300m.

It's not just famous for its long tubing formation, but also for its consistent shape. Jeffery is a coastal town on East Cape about 70 miles northwest of Port Elizabeth. The beaches of this area are also ideal for swimming and body surfing from December to February.

13. Wildflowers of Namaqua

An incredible natural occurrence, Namaquas wetlands are transformed each year as thousands of succulent trees explode during a spring night time event. The viewing of colourful wildflower blossoms in remote places is becoming more frequent.

Located in the northern Cape, the hotspot is rich in 5000 varieties of plants with over 400 species ranging from native to endangered. Several are indigenous to the region and can survive within a dry, dusty environment. In August or September, biomes change for several weeks due to winter rain.

14. Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

The most beautiful coastal area in southern Africa lies between East London and Chintsa on Eastern Cape. The Wild Coast is known for its mesmerizing landscape of craggy cliffs, deep blue ocean, goldsand, green hills, and tropical forest.

The ancestral home of the Xhosa people, whose villages still cover the hillsides, these regions were part of the Transkei during the apartheid period and is considered one of the four states declared to be independent. Following apartheid's end, the province was transferred to East Cape Province in 1994.

15. Robben Island, Western Cape

Table Bay, a World Heritage-listed Robben Island, reminds the world of apartheid horror. Mandela spent 17 days in jail along with other political tyrants in a tiny prison. The best part about the experience is that the ex-prisoners often serve as guidebooks and share vivid firsthand stories of the atrocities that were suffered.

The journey to the island begins with interactive displays at Nelson Mandela's Gateway in Victoria and Alfred waterfront. During the 30- to 45-minute journey the passengers can board a boat to Robben Island, sometimes fighting rough swell. Make a reservation if the tour is full.

17. Durban Botanic Gardens

Visit Botanic Gardens to enjoy beautiful scenery and walk among majestic trees. Sip high teas, watch musical shows or visit butterfly colonies or birds. Established in 1849 to cultivate tropical plants, the Durban Botanical Gardens have over 8,500 plants today, they are Africas oldest botanical gardens. 18. Madikwe Game Reserve, North West Province

Less well known and crowded than some South African's most renowned national parks Madikwe Game Reserve is situated near Botswana' s border. The park lies on the edge of the Kalahara Desert offering beautiful scenery.

There are also animals in the vicinity. The South African fifth largest reserves can be reached in four days by bus or train. There exist several safari lodges within its walls, including Jamala Madikwe and others that range between high end luxury. All have opportunities for the big five and rare animal species like African wild dogs.

19. Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg

The Apartheid museums are harrowing places of historical significance covering an important but tragic part of South African history. This beautifully filmed display and oral testimony truly shows the everyday atrocities and inhumaneness of racism.

The site is situated within a concrete block in the city centre just seven years after the first multi race election was allowed. Once you enter its separated entrance, there are rooms with photographs, video clips and artefacts that can be explored by visiting. These documents show apartheid rises and falls, how race was categorized and what is now incorporated in the Constitution.

20. West Coast National Park

The West Coast National Forest has become popular for local people an hour drive south of Cape Town and should therefore be avoided during the warmer months. The park has wonderful beaches, spectacular beaches, scenic walks with wildlife, and wildflowers. Spring (August, September) is the most beautiful time for flowers and the park is more busy than normal.

West Coast National Park is considered to be a truly unique place. If you'd rather spend some time with friends and family, you'll probably not want to visit this one. TIP: It is not very good facilities, the nature is everything.

21. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

Across the Simangaliso River from the Wetlands is another popular park that you should visit: Hluhluw – Umfolozi Wild Game Reserves. Mostly hilly, the region is home for the Big Five and has a large remaining white rhino population. It was built by an 1885 family of naturalists in the affluent centre of Kwazealand.

Known as a royal hunting place at Shaka, Hluhluwe – Omfolozi is renowned for its diverse wildlife species as well as for its world-class conservancy work. It has less crowded population than Kruger and has many lions, leopards and calamity buffalo. The highlight is its beautiful white rhinos.

22. Durban's Golden Mile

Golden Mile has long been sanctified and is an important place for people who like to relax in Durban. The promenade has numerous hotels and restaurants, swimming pools, skateparks, and surfing spots. Located close to the business centre, the wide sandy beach extends approximately six kilometers.

They overlook many buildings dating largely from the 70s. However there is still some striking Art Deco architecture visible along this bustling boardwalk below. Over the last decade the tourists flocked here for the fun and exciting facilities of these upscale resorts.

23. Cradle of Humankind

The Crux of humankind in the north-west outskirts of Joburg must be visited by anyone whose interest lies in historical research. It also offers an interesting cave and beautiful museum and contains the largest concentration of human ancestral bones. Since 1934 many fossil sites and 200 cave sites were discovered in the Paleophaean archaeological site.

24. Umgeni River Bird Park

Established by Alan Abrey over a stunning area encompassing over 3500 acres, the Umgeni River Birdpark has become an increasingly popular tourist destination in South Africa. The Bird Park hosts around 600 species of colorful, indegenic and exotic birds.

Some commonly seen avian species in this Park include Blue Crane, Kings Vulture, Least Palm Cockatoo, Eastern Blackcapped Lory Blue and Yellow Macaw Common Peat Owl Gray Crown Crane. 25. South African National Museum of Military History

The South African national historical museum is a historical site that was opened on 28 August 1947 by the Premier Jan Smut. The museum is established as an exhibition to preserve the story of the South African role during WWII.

The museum was initially established to house South African conflicts in 1975. All museums are divided into 37 sections that contain over 44,000 items. Various important museum exhibits include military weapons, small arms, graves and monuments, edges, weapons, medals, and military equipment.

26. Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve

The Van Stadens wildflower sanctuary is 35 km away from Port Elizabeth and covers about 500 hectares. These reserves were established to help protect and propagate native plants. The reserve offers adrenaline lovers numerous adventures, including mountain biking, hiking, and cycling.

28. Cape Recife Nature Reserve

This vast area consists of approximately 366 ha with natural dune habitats, clean beaches and spectacular rockouts. There are also bird hides and old military viewing platforms which allow visitors to enjoy great bird watching.

29. South Africa Wine Region: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

The best region for visiting wineries and enjoying wines is the beautiful region between Stellenbosch Paarl and Franschenkoop. It is only a short drive away from Cape Town and can also be visited easily. Stellenbosch and Paarl were larger towns and it was not worth mentioning. We really enjoyed this tiny Franschhoeks village with the white building, the hills and the friendly atmosphere. This beautiful area is worth the visit! TIP: Avoid driving!
